Hello to all,

If you love dolphins and are looking for a way you can help them, then you should join us at Melbourne's Japanese consulate on September 1, 2011!

Celebrate Save Japan Dolphins Day will be a positive and celebratory gathering of dolphin supporters in dozens of cities around the world. We will raise awareness of the annual dolphin drive hunts in Taiji and elsewhere in Japan, and we will let the Japanese government and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums know that we do not accept these abuses towards our friends in the sea. This is an apolitical event and the aim is to raise awareness and communicate with the public.

Okay. Djing is tough - fact. Yep, it's difficult enough to beat mix, kids, throw in belting out live vocals into the mix while your doing it and well it's another level of freaking hard all together! Not for Melbourne's own first lady of live vocal n' DJing, Lux, however. Armed with two turntables and microphone, this singing dj is starting to make waves for the quality of her tunes and sets far and wide. As she prepares for yet another cracking gig at Loop this week, 100% caught up with Lux to talk about her smoking new Fx unit, the importance of LAX airport and sweet hooks and melodies...

When and where was your first ‘Lux’ gig?
The first time ever I did a live vocal set I went all the way over to Bunbury WA about 140km south of Perth in 2007. I don't know how it ended up Bunbury got my debut performance. I think it was mainly the timing was right. But geez did they appreciate it. Usually at the end of your dj set the next person just comes straight on. But in this case once I had finished the promoter stopped the music and the whole place started clapping and screaming. I was in complete shock.

Describe the sound of Lux, for those who haven’t heard you perform …
Sounds like electro tech and tech house with Live lyrics being dropped over the top. Lots of hooks & melodies. I mostly do originals, however I'm partial to mucking around with arrangements of other artists work. I also use a T.C Helicon Voice Fx unit.

What’s the hardest thing about doing a 100% LIVE vocal show?
Being Live in the mix and then having to bring the vocal in Live. Then stuff like not having enough stage to go crazy with. Getting the sound right with my fx unit. Having only two hands when I need at least three.

Where did the name ‘Lux’ come from?
I've djed under the name Lani G for forever however I needed to come up with a stage name for my live vocal set. I love the name of the LA airport LAX. Reminded me of Lustre or Shine. So I played with it for a while and came up with Lux.


You’ve done several gigs at Loop Bar … what do you like about the venue?
It's been a great year for us at Loop. They're really into what we do as far as pushing the live elements of Electronic music. No matter what they are. The sound system is superb. I love the big graphic screens. The location of Loop in the city is a lot calmer than the other end of town so it really adds to the atmosphere. The crowd are always up for it and Kristin who runs it is a doll!

Where do you hope to be in a five years’ time?
Releasing music and touring O/S. Spreading the Melbourne energy and educating promoters and punters overseas about our producers and the amazing 22+ year old dance scene we have in Australia.

What does the rest of 2009 hold for Lux?
I'm hopefully going to be releasing one of the trax I sing live as a single. Can't say much as it's all just come about and nothings set in concrete yet. I have the "Girls Gone Tech" Australian tour coming up this summer with Kaysh (Ho Ju Rec) and myself trudging around the country becoming regular Melbourne Ambassadors! Looking into doing some more free day parties over this coming summer at an outdoor/indoor venue that's never been used. And hopefully some gigs with Bass coming up in the side room doing my live vocal set. And more Kiss Club Lunch!

Talk to me about your upcoming gig at Loop …
This will be the first time out I've used my T.C Helicon Voice Fx unit. So it'll bring the set to life even more with a few preset fx ready to go for each separate live vocal track I do. I'll also be dropping some new stuff from Ho-Ju Records. The White Electric play fully LIVE & it's all free. If your into tech, tech house or electro tech (the nasty type) come down. I'm also doing an Old School set this Sat at Vedette for Climax 15 year anniversary and the all girl line up for the ITM Top 50 Interview party on the 1st Aug @ Miss Libertines. Plus Classic Kandy on the 14th Aug.
